PIRANHA-PROOF FISH MAY BUILD BETTER BODY ARMOR

PIRANHA-PROOF FISH MAY BUILD BETTER BODY ARMOR

Scientists hope to replicate the fish scales of a tough, ancient Amazonian fish that repels predators' bites.

THE GIST
  • The arapaima can grow to nearly 8 feet long and weigh more than 500 pounds.
  • Piranha normally don’t attack the arapaima.
  • The arapaima's outer scales are mineralized bio-material, while the inner ones are made of collagen fibers that form a flexible laminate, almost like a woven cloth.

An ancient Amazonian fish with thick piranha-proof scales may hold the secret to building better bullet-proof body armor, puncture resistant gloves or even safety goggles and CD cases.
Researchers at several institutions have been looking engineering new materials that contain some of the same properties as these fish scales; they’re light, flexible and often transparent. Now some are taking a step forward and actually building these materials.
At the University of California, San Diego, materials science professor Marc Meyers has been studying the scales on the massive freshwater arapaima, which use two layers of scales to repel bites from the predatory piranha.

World's Tiniest Chameleon Found In Madagascar

World's Tiniest Chameleon Found In Madagascar

Researchers have recently discovered four new species of tiny chameleons in the remote rainforests in northern Madagascar. The chameleons are so small that the adult of the smallest species are just over an inch from snout to tail.
The four new species belong to the genus Brookesia, also known as the leaf chameleons, which are already known to contain some very small species, with members typically resembling younger versions of larger species. Adult males of the B. micra species grow to only just over a half-inch (16 millimeters) from nose to bottom, making them some of the smallest reptiles on Earth.
Mostly brown with a touch of green, the coloring of the diminutive creatures is far from spectacular. And unlike what chameleons are famous for, these miniature animals are unable to change their appearance. Nonetheless, researchers are fascinated.

4 Incredible Hanging Hotel Pools

4 Incredible Hanging Hotel Pools

Some hotel pools are more than a place to take a dip. They are designed to make a dramatic impression and heighten the sensations you experience when you swim. The infinity pool at Marina Bay Sands hotel is a great example.
The Skypark pool atop the Marina Bay Sands hotel, in Singapore, is one of the most magnificent pools on earth. The so called “infinity-pool” perched 200 meter above the ground atop three skyscrapers offers a mind-blowing view of the city’s skyline. These days high altitude pools are popping up on top of skyscrapers from New York to Bali to Sydney. As infinity-pools started becoming increasingly common, designers have had to come up with something new to up the ante. Recently, cantilevered pool tanks with see-through sides and flooring have started to gain international attention.

Punch Hole Clouds

Punch Hole Clouds

Punch hole clouds, also known as fallstreak hole are large circular clearings that can appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. Such holes are formed when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing but the water has not frozen yet due to the lack of ice nucleation particles. When a portion of the water does start to freeze it will set off a domino effect causing the water vapor around it to freeze and fall to the earth as well. This leaves a large, often circular, hole in the cloud.
Punch hole clouds have been puzzling sky gazers and scientists alike since the 1940s. A 1968 article in the magazine Weatherwise called them “A Meteorological Whodunit?”.
Because of their rarity and unusual appearance, fallstreak holes are often mistaken for or attributed to UFOs. It is only during the last decade the cause of formation of these clouds has been somewhat understood.
It is believed that a disruption in the stability of the cloud layer, such as that caused by a passing jet, may induce the domino process of evaporation which creates the hole. Such clouds are not unique to any one geographic area and have been photographed from the United States to Russia
