Most Courageous Dogs

It is often said that dogs are the only animal capable of love, usually by people who have been snubbed by an overly snooty cat.  However, time and time again, dogs have shown throughout history that they can not only show love, but the cold hard determination we’d come to expect from hardened soldiers.

10.  Laika

laika
Laika holds both the most inspirational and most depressing titles on this list: the first animal in orbit and also the first animal to die while doing so.
A stray originally named Kudryavka, Laika proved that living organisms were capable of surviving the launch process and subsequent orbit and weightlessness.  Laika only places tenth because her bravery wasn’t her own choice; Laika’s survival was never expected and the true nature of her death was covered up for years.
Still though, Laika goes down in history as the little dog who proved man could reach beyond the stars, and her bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Recently Extinct Animals

5. Pyrenean Ibex
The Pyrenean Ibex has one of the more interesting stories among extinct animals, since it was the first species to ever be brought back into existence via cloning, only to go extinct again just seven minutes after being born due to lung failure. The Pyrenean Ibex was native to the Pyrenees, a mountain range in Andorra, France and Spain. The Pyrenean ibex was still abundant in the fourteenth century (Day 1981). The Pyrenean ibex’s population declined due to a “slow but continuous persecution” and disappeared from the French Pyrenees and the eastern Cantabrian mountain range by the mid-nineteenth century. Its situation has been critical since the beginning of the 20th century, when it was estimated that the Pyrenean population in Spain numbered only about 100 individuals. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the population never rose above 40 individuals. In 1981, the population was reported to be 30. At the end of the 1980′s the population size was estimated at 6-14 individuals. The last naturally born Pyrenean Ibex, named Celia, died on January 6th, 2000, after being found dead under a fallen tree at the age of 13. That animal’s only companion had died just a year earlier due to old age.

Fascinating Cases of Mind Control

5. Toxoplasma Gondii
Toxoplasma gondii is a common parasite the definitive host of which is the cat, but the parasite can be carried by all known mammals including humans. T. gondii infections have the ability to change the behavior of rats and mice, making them drawn to rather than fearful of the scent of cats. This effect is advantageous to the parasite, which will be able to sexually reproduce if its host is eaten by a cat. The infection is almost surgical in its precision, as it does not affect a rat’s other fears such as the fear of open spaces or of unfamiliar smelling food.

Gruesome Medieval Torture Devices

5. Spanish Donkey
The Spanish Donkey was a device which consisted of a main board cut with a wedge at the top fastened to two cross-beams. The naked victim was placed astride the main board as if riding a donkey, and various numbers of weights were attached to his or her feet. The agony could be ‘fine-tuned’ by using lighter or heavier weights. Sources relate that on occasion, the wedge would slice entirely through the victim as a result of the immense weight attached to his or her feet.

More Common Historical Myths

5. Caligula’s Horse
The Myth: Emperor Caligula made his horse a consul (a figurative head of the republican government)
Caligula’s love for his horse, Incitatus, was well known in his time and in present times, but the modern love of a good myth has promoted the horse to a far greater position than in reality. About seventy years after Caligula died, the historian Seutonius wrote of Caligula and Incitatus: “Besides a stall of marble, a manger of ivory, purple blankets and a collar of precious stones, he even gave his horse a house, a troop of slaves and furniture, for the more elegant entertainment of the guests invited in his name: and it is also said that he planned to make him consul.” The fact that this was not a first hand account (hence saying: “it is also said”) the report is dubious. There are no other records that indicate that Caligula did ever indicate that he planned to raise Incitatus to such an important place – let alone do it.

Amazing Lost Or Suppressed Inventions

5. Cold Fusion Device
Eugene Mallove
Eugene Mallove was a notable proponent and supporter of research into cold fusion. He authored the book Fire from Ice, which details the 1989 report of table-top cold fusion from Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann at the University of Utah. The book claims the team did produce “greater-than-unity” output energy in an experiment, which supposedly was successfully replicated on several occasions. Mallove claims that the results were suppressed through an organized campaign of ridicule from mainstream physicists. He was fatally beaten May 14, 2004 in Norwich, Connecticut by an unknown assailant. His violent death was suspected by some to be related to the nature of his work.

Lemon

Just cut 2-3 thin slices of lemon and put it in a cup containing driking water.  The water will become "alkaline water". Drink for the whole day, just by adding more water. Take it as drinking water everyday. It is good for health.

This is the latest in medicine, effective for cancer!
Read carefully & you be the judge

Lemon (Citrus
) is a miraculous product to kill cancer cells.   It is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy    Why do we not know about that? Because there are laboratories interested in making a synthetic version that will bring them huge profits. You can now help a friend in need by letting him/her know that lemon juice is beneficial in preventing the disease.   Its taste is pleasant and it does not produce the horrific effects of chemotherapy.   How many people will die while this closely guarded secret is kept, so as not to jeopardize the beneficial multimillionaires largecorporations?   As you know, the lemon tree is known for its varieties of lemons and limes.   You can eat the fruit in different ways: you can eat the pulp, juice press, prepare drinks, sorbets, pastries, etc... It is credited with many virtues, but the most interesting isthe effect it produces on cysts and tumors.   This plant is a proven remedy against cancers of all types.   Some say it is very useful in all variants of cancer .     It is considered also as ananti microbialspectrum against bacterial infections and fungi, effective against internal parasites and worms, it regulates blood pressure which is too high and anantidepressant, combats stress and nervous disorders.  The source of this information is fascinating: it comes from one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world, says that after more than 20 laboratory tests since 1970, the extracts revealed that
It destroys the malignant cells in 12 cancers
including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreas
The compounds of this tree showed 10,000 times better than the product Adriamycin, a drug normally used chemotherapeutic in the world, slowing the growth of cancer cells. And what is even more astonishing:   this type of therapy with lemon extract only destroys malignant cancer cells and it does not affect healthy cells.

Sequence Photography - The Power Of Motion

Sequence photography is a technique of shooting a series of images in where the subject is captured in successive motion. Sequence photography is a wonderful way of conveying motion in a static image. A merged photo sequence can radically show a different perspective much more than what can be captured in a single image.

Ridiculous Old-Timey Sports Logos

Chances are, your favorite team has a fairly silly logo.  The vast majority of them are cartoonish in nature, but at least the ones today look good.  Computer animation, slick artwork, and fine-tuned quality control churn out logos that may be geared toward children, but at least look good on that ridiculously overpriced Official Team jacket you’re wearing.

This was not always the case though.  In the earliest of times, sports logos were simply crudely drawn letters signifying the team: B for Boston, NY for New York, SOS for any team from Cleveland, stuff like that.  But then the teams started getting creative and artsy.  They shouldn’t have.  They really, REALLY shouldn’t have.

10.  Boston Celtics, 1950-1968

bostonceltics
The Celtics have long been represented by a leprechaun, but at least the current one looks the part.  This was their first vision of one which, while awful in basically every way, wouldn’t be all that disturbing except that he has boobs.  What’s worse: they’re not bad-looking.  You could motorboat those things.  Awful nice of him to crudely draw the letters N.B.A. on his Jughead-looking crown, by the way, in case we forgot what sport we were watching.

Client Infographic: The Mobile Advantage

Nuance Communications has released a new infographic, The Mobile Advantage, sharing the results of their own mobile consumer preference research. Designed by InfoNewt, this infographic design tells the story of how important mobile apps are to brands.
If you’re a consumer-facing organization hoping to use mobile to build a strong, long-lasting relationship with your customers, there's some good news! A new survey shows that smartphone owners are increasingly downloading not just games but customer service apps - especially from their mobile carrier, bank and favorite retailers. In fact, 84% of consumers surveyed generally prefer to use a company's mobile app for routine inquiries (checking balance, check flight status, etc.) rather than calling the company on the phone.
As a B2B communication tool, this infographic does a great job sharing the key findings from the research statistics. Since Nuance performed the research behind how apps form positive customer service experiences for customers, the infographic is a good tool to share that unique knowledge with their customers.
Broken into a three-part story, the design starts with some basic information about the growth of mobile devices. The center section focuses on the huge impact on the customers’ view of a company when they have a customer service app. And finally, the last section explores what customers would like to see in a customer service app.

A History of Western Typefaces

We all love to poke fun at people for using Comic Sans in inappropriate places. But there is even more complexity to the usage and properness of various fonts. Did you know some guy in the 18th century claimed that a certain font would blind readers? I guess some people don’t mess around with typeface. In today’s world, font is very important in establishing an identity or brand, as is seen by the distinct fonts in Facebook and Google. Saving the environment even influences people’s font choice. The University of Wisconsin changed their standard font to save ink on prints.
Totally random story that I just thought of- A couple of weeks ago I finished a large group report of 30+ pages with words, figures, equations, etc. After submitting it, I decided to change the font to Webdings; it was the best laugh I’ve had in a very long time. Maybe it was the release of stress from finishing the report.
Anyhow, hope all the history buffs out there enjoy this infographic, there are some interesting little bits of info. There are definitely some potential Jeopardy questions in there. [Via]

Meet Tyson the terrifying swan

With the sun shining and the water calm, it seemed like the perfect day for messing about in his boat. But this hapless kayaker didn’t bank on Tyson – an enormous swan which stalks this pretty waterway.
The bird, standing 4ft tall with an 8ft wingspan, batters anyone who dares to venture near his nest. Locals say he has attacked at least three people in the past month.
His antics have meant that a two-mile stretch of the popular Grand Union Canal in Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire, is now a ‘no-go area’ for children and families.

Bunny story

A man is driving along a highway and sees a rabbit jump out across the middle of the road.
He swerves to avoid hitting it, but unfortunately
the rabbit jumps right in front of the car.

The driver,
a sensitive man as well as an animal lover,
pulls over and gets out to see
what has become of the rabbit.
Much to his dismay, the rabbit is the
Easter Bunny, and he is
 DEAD .
The driver feels so awful
   that he
begins to cry.

A beautiful blonde woman driving down the highway
sees a man crying on the side of the road
and pulls over.

She steps out of the car and asks the man what's wrong.

"I feel terrible," he explains,
"I accidentally hit the Easter
Bunny with my car and KILLED HIM."
 The blonde says,"Don't worry."
She runs to her car and pulls out a spray can. She walks over to the limp, dead  Easter Bunny, bends down, and sprays the contents onto him.
The  Easter Bunny jumps up,
waves its paw at the two of them
and hops off down the road.

Ten feet away he stops,
turns around and waves again,

he hops down the road another 10 feet, turns and waves,
hops another ten feet, turns and waves, and repeats this again and again and again and again, until he hops out of sight.
The man is astonished.
He runs over to the woman and demands, "What is in that can?
What did you spray on the Easter Bunny?"

The woman turns the can around so that the man can read the label.
It says..
(Are you ready for this?)

(Are you sure?)

(Last chance)

(OK, here it is)

It says,

"Hair Spray

Restores life to dead hair, and adds permanent wave."

Kensington Palace

Nice pad, but I bet Kate changes the wallpaper! As Kensington Palace opens to the public after a £12m makeover we take an exclusive tour of Kate and Will's new home

Not since the Windsor fire of 1992, has there been a royal makeover on this scale. Indeed, the last time a palace went through a facelift of this magnitude, it was courtesy of a German bomb.
In the case of Kensington Palace, however, this £12million transformation has not been prompted by any misfortune but by years of careful planning. Admittedly, there has been one unexpected, 11th-hour alteration to the designs.
But no one is complaining about the decision of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to set up home here — because their presence in the private wing of the palace is only going to draw even more visitors through the doors on the public side.

A few days ago, the Queen came to Kensington to re-open what used to be the seat of royal power until the monarchy moved to Buckingham Palace. Before she cut the ribbon, she toured the rooms where Queen Victoria grew up and inspected the new displays which feature everything from Prince Albert’s tongue-scraper to a new range of Diana, Princess of Wales, wallpaper and a very creepy children’s birthday party (of which more later).
‘We’ve set out to awaken a sleeping beauty,’ announced Charles Mackay, the chairman of Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity which runs the place. He might equally have called it a sleeping giant. Because, after years in the heritage doldrums, KP is finally exploiting its true potential as one of the capital’s major tourist attractions.

Your Brain on Prescription Drugs

Prescription drugs are, in my opinion, one of contemporary America’s most pervasive evils. I hear people say things like “You know, there’s a pill for everything!” and my brain hurts. This is all-to-common of a statement.
This quick-fix attitude is EXTREMELY detrimental, and has been fostered passionately by the pharmaceutical industry as well as the advertisers that work with them.
These are legal substances that poison you. They come in many varieties. We’ve all seen the tweaked-out kid on adderall trying in vain to save their grade on test day, blindly led by the notion that such a pill had the power to make them successful at school.
Adderall is only the tip of the iceberg. As this infographic illustrates, the number of prescription drug overdose deaths has increased drastically in the past few years.
Please, if you are considering getting a prescription or taking any prescription drugs, familiarize yourself with this insidious killer. (via)

12 Extremely Weird Names of Molecules

Molecules make up all the matter around us. Their interactions allow us to think, move, and feel, and provide us with countless spectacles of nature. Some are simple whereas others are hugely complex. In order to keep track of all of these, molecules follow strict naming rules which describe their shapes, properties, or how they were discovered. This affords little room for fun names, but every so often one slips through.

Arsole is a pyrrole molecule with an arsenic atom in it. Its name is purely based on the standard chemical rules for naming, but is quite an amusing name nonetheless.

Doomsday Predictions Debunked

2012 has been a pretty good year, aside from the stigma placed on it years in advance. I’ve been fearing this year for a few years now. Not because I completely believed in the Mayan Calendar or anything of that nature, but more because the social hysteria this date has caused alone is enough to kill you alone.
For those of you who needed that one infographic to keep your hope alive in humanity, feast your eyes! Down below is a detailed description of every failed major apocalypse prediction ever made. It spans from Nostradamus to the more recent Harold Camping.
Now, I post this not to highlight the failures of others, but instead to show how someone can predict something as bold as the end of the days and it not come true. A lot of research can focus around one date all based on a hunch and many of us will ride that hunch momentarily, or to the ground. Be aware of all possibilities, but also don’t believe everything you read. The end may be predictable and it may not be, only time will tell. Live everyday like it’s your last and spread peace and happiness everywhere you go, starting with this glorious Humpday. Have a great rest of the week! [Via]

How to Pull Off The Perfect Marriage Proposal

The actual information in the infographic was not the main reason this caught my attention. The topic in particular has been a trend I’ve noticed on the internet. When using StumbleUpon, it seems like every day without fail I come across another video of someone’s proposal. It’s almost as if there is a competition for the most amazing proposal viral video. I have to say some of them are really cool, but they fact that they all go viral means I can’t steal their ideas. What’s your favorite proposal video?
